It Hurts Me – Elvis Presley

Introduction

Just before Christmas in 1962, Charlie Daniels, the future country music icon, conceived the idea for this song while driving from El Paso, Texas, to the East Coast. Shortly thereafter, his longtime friend Bob Johnston invited him to Nashville to collaborate on songwriting, and together they completed this particular song. Reflecting on the process in his Songfacts interview, Daniels recollects, “We continued working on it, and we wrapped it up. Bob created a demo, and the company he was associated with at the time, Hill & Range, which managed Elvis Presley Music and Gladys Music (Elvis Presley’s two companies), took charge.”

The subsequent events, as the saying goes, became part of history. Daniels shares, “Elvis came to town, picked it up, and held onto it for almost a year in what was termed his portfolio. They would select songs for Elvis, and when he entered the recording studio, he would review them. If he liked a song, he would proceed to record it. So, he recorded this one, and it turned out to be,” as Daniels puts it, “the most significant thing that had ever happened to me in my life.”

Lyrics

It hurts me to see him treat you the way he does
It hurts me to see sit and cry
When I know I could be so true
If I had someone like you
It hurts me to see those tears in your eyes

The whole town is talking, they’re callin’ you a fool
For listening to his same old lies
And when I know I could be so true
If I had someone like you
It hurts me to see the way he makes you cry

You love him too much, you’re too blind to see
He’s only playing a game
But he’s never loved you
He never will
And darling, don’t you know he will never change

Oh, I know he never will set you free
Because he’s just that kind of guy
But if you ever tell him you’re through
I’ll be waiting for you
Waiting to hold you so tight
Waiting to kiss you goodnight
Yes, darling, if I had someone like you
